Shradhanjali is a handicraft unit of Auroville, the International Township located in rural Tamil Nadu, 165 km south of Chennai, South India.
Since the beginning, its goals have been:
To gather the wealth of nature as expressed through flowers, foliage and seeds and convert this into beautiful products in a conscious and caring way.
To provide a pleasant, stimulating, enriching, educative and empowering working environment for the young village women it employs.
To generate wealth for the growth of Auroville by doing business in an ethical conscious manner. Profits generated by Shradhanjali are channeled back into the community for its maintenance and development.
Flowers represent the radiant joy and beauty of Nature, symbolic of its aspiration towards the Light. Since ancient times, flowers have traditionally served to convey feelings, and in India, to offer worship as well.
Every flower and plant has a "vibration", and at Shradhanjali we try to capture and preserve the unique quality of each blossom, grass, leaf, seed or seedpod in our intricately worked dried and pressed flowers and natural seeds ranges.
Shradhanjali is committed to using environmentally friendly processes and techniques.
The building is designed with natural ventilation and light. It is equipped with solar energy, wastewater is recycled and rainwater is harvested.
The flowers and plants are grown in our own garden using only organic manure. Drip irrigation is used to prevent water wastage.
Flowers are handpicked everyday and dried in cardboard presses. The seeds and seedpods are harvested seasonally and sun-dried.
All steps, from the growing of plants to their drying, decorative pasting and finally packaging, are done by hand using organic methods.
Most products are made of handmade paper, which is processed by recycling cotton rags and adding other natural fibres like straw, wool, algae, banana pulp or bamboo.
Auroville is located in Tamil Nadu, South India, 165 km south of Madras. The township of Auroville was founded on February 28th 1968 on a barren stretch of land, when to symbolize Auroville's ideal of human unity, a handful of earth from 124 countries and 23 Indian states was placed in a lotus-shaped urn.
Auroville’s diverse commercial activities provide the essential means for this experimental international township to grow and develop. In Auroville, work is a means to find oneself; it is one’s yoga-sadhana.
At Shradhanjali, we endeavour to participate in the Auroville adventure fully and truly, by continuing to work towards perfection in the quality of our products, in our relationship with our employees, as well as our buyers and suppliers, in caring for and using the environment in a sustainable way and lastly in participating in the development of Auroville in a dynamic manner
In March 2010, we celebrated 30 years of Shradhanjali. Many friends, well-wishers, previous workers and collaborators joined us for a small celebration to express our gratitude to that spirit of Auroville which holds this matchless experiment together, and to reiterate the aspiration with which we started out: an offering of ourselves, our work and our faith.
